La Ola, a group of artists from North Hudson County, are exhibiting their art in a show entitled “Cultural Refugees” at Northern Soul bar in Hoboken.
Cultural Refugees is an exhibition of paintings, photographs, video, and mixed media works from artists living in Union City, West New York, Weehawken, North Bergen, and Guttenberg.
According to a press release, “The purpose of the show is to present our art outside of where we live, where we have found little to no support of the arts, making us feel as if we have no cultural home of our own. We are artists creating our own artist community even if it means seeking cultural refuge in neighboring cities. Only one cultural art center exists in Union City, and absolutely no other art galleries or programs in the rest of North Hudson County. The goal of this exhibit is to call attention to the lack of resources, and support to share our art with our community in hopes to call attention to this need.”
The opening reception took place on Monday, June 16 amidst a crowd cheering “USA! USA!” during a World Cup game. The art will be on display until August 17. Artists in the exhibit include Ray Arcadio, Julissa Bedoya, Jaime Botero, Nicole Contreras, Felix Anthony Gosse, Lissanne Lake, Tatiana Lopez, and Roxana Zavala Marroquin from North Hudson County and video artist Leona Strassberg Steiner from Israel. –Art Schwartz
