NORTH BERGEN – North Bergen resident Danny McDermott was presented with a proclamation on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at the Town Commissioners meeting. McDermott, a World Boxing Union Junior Welterweight Boxing Champion, scored a sixth round knockout against former champion Ronnel Esparas in the title bout on Sept. 13 in the Philippines.
Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the Board of Commissioners presented McDermott with a plaque to commemorate his winning the World Boxing Council Asia championship, making him the first North Bergen native to win a world title since James “Cinderella Man” Braddock defeated Max Baer in 1935.
McDermott’s children, Danny Jr. (age 5) and Kain (4), looked on proudly as their dad accepted the honor.
