BAYONNE BRIEFS

Bayonne Historical Society honoring James Hennessey next week

The Bayonne Historical Society will hold its Annual Man of Achievement presentation this year at City Hall as part of the Veteran’s Day celebration on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. and it will honor James “Jim” Hennessey, a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge.
A presentation will be made to Hennessey by Lee Fahley, society trustee and past president.

A Bayonne native, Hennessey entered the Army in 1944, and after receiving training was assigned to the 87th Infantry Division, which passed through Bayonne when shipping out. Hennessey was assigned to E Company and was delivered to the line in December 1944.

After Germany punched through the Allied Forces in the Adrienne forest region of Belgium, combat began. E Company soldiers were brought in as reinforcements following the Allied casualties in the first days of the Battle of the Bulge.

After serving honorably, Hennessey was discharged from the Army on Dec. 15, 1945. He returned to Bayonne, became a U.S. Mail carrier, and married Dolly Tagliareni in 1949. The couple have two sons and two grandsons. Hennessey retired from the post office in 1982.
