BAYONNE – At 6:01 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24, the holiday season officially began in the city.
That’s because Santa Claus stepped out from a Bayonne Fire Department truck to the cheers of dozens of onlookers at 25th Street and Broadway.
In an annual tradition, the city had erected a stage in the street in front of the McDonald’s restaurant for the Santa visit and tree-lighting ceremony. Prior to the big man’s arrival, attendees were treated to performances by the Bayonne High School Jazz Ensemble and the All Saints Catholic Academy Choir.
Mayor James Davis and all five members of the City Council were in attendance, as was Terrence Malloy, coordinator of the city’s Urban Enterprise Zone, which helped sponsor the event.
“From everyone in City Hall, a healthy and happy holiday season,” said Mayor Davis.
Following Santa’s arrival, 6-year-old Gianna La Pelusa, daughter of Third Ward Councilman Gary La Pelusa, hit the button that turned on the lights on the approximately 25-foot tree in front of McDonald’s.
The climate was temperate for a late November evening, allowing for an enjoyable event.
“We couldn’t have asked for better weather,” said city spokesman Joe Ryan.
After the tree lighting, Santa sat in his throne-like seat and doled out candy canes to the children who had waited in a block-long line.
A special tram ride also transported children up and down Broadway as part of the festivities. –Joseph Passantino
