BAYONNE — The Bayonne Fire Department was dispatched to International Matex Tank Terminals on East 22nd Street on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7:13 a.m. on the report of a fuel leak.
Arriving units discovered diesel fuel spewing from a 3-inch fitting on the side of an industrial storage tank, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
The tank reportedly contained approximately 15,000 barrels of diesel fuel.
“The Bayonne Fire Department Hazmat Team and IMTT specialists worked together and managed to plug the leak,” Rogers said.
Less than 2,500 barrels of product are believed to have spilled into the containment dike, Rogers said. IMTT used seven vacuum trucks to clean it out. The remaining product was transferred to another tank using a pump system.
There were no reported injuries.
IMTT reported that the leaking product was contained to the dike and tank.
The DEP was at the scene and the Hudson Regional Health Commission was notified, a fire official said.
