Good bye, red-light cameras…for now

STATEWIDE — The state Department of Transportation has told towns all over New Jersey that they have to shut down their red-light cameras by Dec. 16.
A letter sent to town officials said that final report data should be sent to the DOT. The DOT will determine whether to continue or disband the controversial program, which snaps pictures of drivers running red lights and automatically tickets them. Some have said that the time to go through a yellow light is shorter near those cameras, and questioned whether they improve traffic safety.
Jersey City is among the towns that has had such cameras.
