City Hall to hold public hearing on Hoboken Yards redevelopment Wednesday

HOBOKEN—A city-hatched plan setting the parameters for large-scale development along Hoboken’s southern railroad corridor will be the sole topic of discussion at a special meeting of the Hoboken City Council this coming Wednesday from 7 to 10 p.m. Members of the public are invited to give their opinions on the plan and clear up any misunderstandings about what it entails.
NJ Transit has been angling for a new mixed-use community on 36 acres of land surrounding the Erie-Lackawanna train terminal since the mid-2000s. But the area is also a city-designated redevelopment area, which gives Hoboken’s city government the power to set special zoning rules and enforce them through a redevelopment agreement.
The current proposed version of the Hoboken Yards Redevelopment Plan would allow NJ Transit to build up to 2.3 million square feet of new development, including three office buildings potentially as tall or taller than Hoboken’s tallest building, the W Hotel.
The Hoboken Yards plan is scheduled to go before a final vote at the City Council’s regular meeting next Wednesday, Dec. 17. Last Tuesday, the Hoboken Planning Board ruled that the plan was consistent with the city’s Master Plan but gave 13 recommendations to the City Council.
