WNY police launch cancer awareness campaign

WEST NEW YORK — For the third straight year, the West New York PBA and the West New York PSA have worked closely with Kaitlin Chieco, from the American Cancer Society, to raise awareness and funds for cancer.
“This year will mark the first time that we joined with a sponsor who helped us in our endeavors,” said PBA President Thomas Mannion. “Wendy Almonte of Synergy Sports and Rehabilitation Center in West New York assisted us greatly and has become our new fund raising partner. Also, we are especially grateful to have been helped by David Morel of North Bergen’s Motor Vehicle Commission who joined us in this effort since day one.”
Both unions and Synergy started out the campaign by sponsoring the start-up cost of $1200 to have t-shirts designed and printed.
During the month of October, which is Cancer Awareness Month, the t-shirts were sold to raise awareness and money which is why they selected the slogan of “Cops for a Cure.”
“Our unions do a lot of community service but this one is held dear to our heart because cancer has affected every member of our department directly or indirectly through our family and friends,” Mannion said. “A special thanks to our sponsor, members, family and friends who helped raise $4,000 which is being donated to the American Cancer Society. This would be impossible without the tireless efforts of Detective Henry Codina and Detective Karriem Shabazz, as well as everyone who participated and gave their time and energy for this great cause.”
The check presentation to the American Cancer Society will be in front of Town Hall in West New York on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 4 p.m.
