BAYONNE – Dozens of Bayonne firefighters battled a three-alarm, mid-day blaze on Broadway between 35th and 36th streets, a fire official said.
The fire erupted at 790 Broadway, a three-story frame building next to the Ctown supermarket near the corner of 35th Street.
Initial arriving firefighters encountered smoke on the second floor of the structure, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers. The fire was in the rear of the building and was traveling to the third floor of the building, and the roof was full of smoke.
A 35th Street resident confirmed that the fire had emanated from the back of the building.
About 40 firefighters, the entire Bayonne shift, battled the fire, Rogers said. The Jersey City Fire Department sent three companies to the scene. The Bayonne Fire Department also received mutual-aid responses from the North Hudson and Kearny fire departments, which were manning the Bayonne firehouses.
There was no information on any injuries. Reports at scene indicated that individuals in the building, and at adjoining but unexposed structure at 792 Broadway, were evacuated, according to Rogers.
As of 2:21 p.m., there was no readily apparent cause for the fire, Rogers said. The cause of the fire is under investigation. –Joseph Passantino
