GRECO, SAMUEL J.

A funeral mass was celebrated Jan. 6 at Holy Rosary Church, Jersey City, Samuel J. “Mickey” Greco, 95, of Jersey City. He passed away Jan. 2 at Christ Hospital. Born in Jersey City, he was a lifelong resident. On Sept. 23, 1940, Mickey enlisted himself in the United States Army. Eager to support his country, he actively fought in World War II, participating in the Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and the Central European campaigns. He was wounded in action on Sept. 21, 1944 in France and subsequently discharged. For his service, he was awarded several decorations and citations, most notably, the World War II Victory Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with four Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. Upon his return, he worked as a tractor trailer driver before acquiring a position with the US Postal Service, retiring in 1997.
He was predeceased by his wife Grace T. (nee: Pica), his sons Edward and Donald Greco and siblings; Bernard (Barney), Louis, Sr., Carmine, James (Butch) Greco, Ann Palmieri, Antoinette (Toni) Slawinski, Loretta Miller and Carmella Flanagan. He was the grandfather of Jason Greco (JCFD) and his wife Laura and of Matthew Greco and his companion Emily, and great-grandfather of Massimo Greco, father in law of Carol Greco. He is also survived by his siblings; Mary Bakerowski, Rose Borchert, Jean Greco, Dominick Greco and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
