Hudson County public officials come out against plan to cut PATH service

HUDSON COUNTY – Public officials from throughout Hudson County and parts of Essex County joined with U.S. Senator Robert Menendez and Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto at the Grove Street PATH station on Jan. 4 to condemn possible changes to that PATH system that could do away with overnight service and even privatize the transit service in order to save money.

Rep. Albio Sires blasted the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for trying to save pennies on the backs of the people of Hudson County.

A very angry Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer demanded that the Port Authority publicly withdraw that recommendation, saying that even the perception of it being possibly will hurt communities like Hoboken which depend on the PATH.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, who brought together the host of mayors, state and federal officials, said successful development in places like Hoboken, Jersey City and more recently Harrison, came as a result of the dependable transportation PATH provided, and said busing and other possible overnight options would not work and would do significant economic damage to Hudson County and New Jersey.

“New Jersey has been getting the short end of the stick from the Port Authority,” Sires said, “and it’s time for this to stop.”
