Garcia applauds Port Authority for dropping service cuts

Dear Editor:
Democracy is indeed alive and well. Here’s the proof. When a plan to cut overnight PATH train service was unveiled in the midst of the holidays there was a collective chorus of voices from all walks of life expressing opposition for obvious reasons, primarily because of the economic hardship it would cause riders who depend on the 24 hour rail service to get to work. Elected officials responded accordingly by banding together and speaking out against the proposed cuts in service. This of course is what we’re elected to do, it’s our job, so no pat on the back is needed or expected. But I mention it to remind everyone, including my legislative colleagues, what we can accomplish when we work together. It’s clear that pressure from legislative leaders and constituents prompted Port Authority officials to table this ill-conceived idea to eliminate overnight PATH train service.
I thank Port Authority officials for listening to reason and the will of the people to maintain this vital rail service. And I commend the hundreds of people who took a stand on this issue and signed our petition as well as others. But our work is not done. We need to expand public transportation to meet the demand, to ease congestion on our roadways and reduce air pollution. So let’s not rest on our laurels. Let’s all roll up our sleeves, propose ideas, collaborate, compromise, and work together to find solutions. As I always say …. we can, we will, watch us make a difference.

Sincerely,
Carmelo G. Garcia
