MANGEL, LILLIAN EPSTEIN

96, Trustee of Jewish Family Service of Hudson and central figure in supporting arts group for seniors at Bayonne JCC died on January 16, 2015. She was the mother of daughters, Flo Ellen Maslow (Richard) of Millburn and Lake Worth, Fla., and Phyllis Fields (Stuart) of Boynton Beach, Fla. She was predeceased by her husband, Solomon. She is also survived by her granddaughters Dr. Stacey Maslow, Susan Leferman, Jennifer Seligman and Valerie Kivowitz; 7 great-grandchildren, Joshua Sol, Drew and Ella Leferman, Gabriel, Sophie and Jonathan Seligman and Hunter Kivowitz. Lillian graduated from Pace University. In 1942, she married Solomon Z. Mangel, and both became active in volunteering in organizations to help better the lives of others. Lillian trained as a nurse’s aide and volunteered during World War II at Passaic General Hospital. A trustee on the board of the Jewish Family Service of Hudson County, Mrs. Mangel helped JFS and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society with the resettlement of Russian, European and Chinese immigrants, finding housing and job opportunities for them. The Bayonne Jewish Community Center benefited from Lillian’s involvement continuing the Mangel Institute for Creative Thinking, a cultural arts program that her husband had designed for seniors. It remains ongoing to this day. Mrs. Mangel was a past president of Passaic Hadassah and a life member. She was also a trustee of Bayonne’s Temple Emanu El. Mrs. Mangel was one of six children of Sidney and Rose Epstein. Also surviving is her brother, Dr. Lawrence Batlan. She was predeceased by her sisters, Florence Shulman and Charlotte Perelman, and her brothers, Morton and Marvin Epstein.
