Man jumps to death off NJ Turnpike bridge

A 20-year-old man jumped to his death off the NJ Turnpike extension bridge at Garfield and Bayview avenues at about 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8.
Jersey City police and Fire Department personnel responded to the area on the report of a man threatening to jump off the bridge, said Carly Baldwin, public information person for the Jersey City Public Safety office.
“Upon arrival, the man had already jumped off the bridge to the ground below,” Baldwin said. “It is estimated that he jumped between 50-60 feet. He landed on the train tracks below.”
The reasons, she said, are still unknown. JCPD is investigating. Members of the JCFD and JCPD carried the man to an awaiting ambulance. He was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center but pronounced deceased there.
The NJ State Police are handling all the rest of the matter, including releasing the name, because it happened so near the Turnpike.
