A funeral mass was celebrated Feb. 13 at St. Johns R.C. Church, Lakehurst, for Anthony R. Ferrino, 94, of Toms River. He died Feb. 6 at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Anthony was a Jersey City police officer from 1947-1976 before retiring as lieutenant commander of the Juvenile Bureau. Anthony was a founding member of the Jersey City Police Credit Union and was “The Book of Knowledge” about Jersey City. Anthony was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Port St. Lucie, Fla. He was an avid reader, enjoyed his family genealogy and was a lifelong Yankee fan. Anthony and his wife were parishioners of St. Johns R.C. Church, Lakehurst and were members and benefactors at Holy Family R.C. Church, Port St. Lucie, where he was very active in the men’s club. Among their donations is a relief statue of the Holy Family in the foyer of the church.
Raised in Jersey City, he resided in Seaside Park and Port St. Lucie before moving to Toms River in 2010. Anthony proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Anthony was predeceased by his wife of 69 years Olympia in 2011 and his daughter Annette Chelak. Anthony is survived by his son Anthony R. Ferrino Jr. of Port St. Lucie; two daughters, Angela Riccio and her husband Richard of Jersey City, Dora Musante and her husband Charles of Hyde Park, N.Y.; son-in-law Alex Chelak of Scotch Plains, brother-in-law Herbert Smarro of Toms River, sister-in-law Frances Smarro of Jersey City, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
