In a movement inspired by the recent passing of a beloved online “dad blogger,” Oren Miller, from lung cancer at the age of 41, dad bloggers across the world have taken to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to tackle one of Miller’s biggest goals — getting Amazon to rename its “Amazon Mom” program to “Amazon Family”.
“Words have enormous power,” said Lorne Jaffe, a former Jersey City resident and current dad blogger. “In this changing world in which more and more fathers like myself elect to stay home and take care of their children, the use of exclusionary terms like ‘Mom’ over ‘Family’ are outdated. Oren recognized and wrote about this 2 years ago and pointed people towards a petition (https://www.change.org/p/jeff-bezos-change-the-name-of-the-amazon-mom-program-to-amazon-family) created by Jeffrey Harrington (a Kansas dad blogger). Oren was my friend and a leader in the dad blogger community and taking up his cause en masse using the hashtag #AmazonFamilyUS is the least we can do. It’s also great that moms are joining us creating one voice.”
In just five days, the massive undertaking has attracted coverage by media outlets including CNN, TODAY Parents, Lifetime Moms, Yahoo Parenting, Huffington Post, IDigital Times Australia and The Telegraph (UK). Currently The United States is the only country in which Amazon operates where its popular program is designated “Mom” instead of “Family.” Amazon has yet to comment.
