A mass of Christian burial was offered March 23 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Avon by the Sea, for Robert G. Dalton, 62, of Neptune City. He was a former longtime resident of Jersey City and retired lieutenant in the Jersey City Police Department. He passed away peacefully on March 17 at his home surrounded by his family. Robert was born in Jersey City to the late Henry and Gertrude Kilmartin Dalton and had resided there until moving to Neptune City six years ago. He was a graduate of Marist High School, Class of 1970, and graduated from New Jersey City University. As a Jersey City resident, he was a parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Church. Since coming to Neptune City he had been a parishioner of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Avon by the Sea.
Robert was a lieutenant with the Jersey City Police Department, retiring in September 2001. He was the president of the Police Superior Officers Association of the JCPD, a member of the JCPD Emerald Society, and was a member of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, Belmar. He also served as Dean of Students for Hudson Catholic High School, director of the Jersey City Parking Authority and Manager of Jersey City CCTV. His legacy will live on in the countless Jersey City children he mentored while coaching CYO basketball and Little League Baseball and in his students at Hudson Catholic High School. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Jill Ann Taylor Dalton; his two sons and their wives Adam and Lisa Dalton of Toms River and Christopher and Jade Dalton of North Arlington; his five grandchildren, Colin Carr, Julia, Matthew, Kara and Kieran Dalton; and his siblings, James and Barbara Dalton of Vero Beach, Fla., John and Jane Dalton of Sayreville, Vincent and Sharon Smith of Middletown, George and Louise Dalton of Conowingo, Md., Anne O’Brien, Rita Healy, and Mary and Mark Hussey, all of North Arlington, and many nieces and nephews.
