Tom, Higgins come up big for Wizards

Meeting twice this season the (2-3) Wizards have notched two 3-0 victories versus the (1-4) Dragons in the JCC of Bayonne Indoor Soccer Jr. Division. Facing each other for one last time before they clash in their playoff bout both the Wizards and Dragons hoped to set a positive tone with a win. It took 25 minutes for the Wizards to end the scoreless tie as Jonathan Tom blasted his first goal of the season off an assist by Miguel Vargas. Moments later the Dragons tied the game at 1-1 on a Roman Popowski penalty boot. With goals at a premium both squads took their shots with Brenna Popowski, Lilliana Cordero, and Michael Cordero firing shots on net for the Dragons while the Wizards answered with Adonis White, Paige Higgins, and Aaliyana Cifuentes fueling the offense. Loading up on defense, Vikram Balagura and Raunak Verma helped the Dragons hold off the Wizards’ attack as the game entered its last five minutes. Searching for a spark, the Wizards’ David Matos launched a long pass to Paige Higgins who railed in the game winning goal as the Wizards escaped with a 2-1 victory.
