JERSEY CITY — Councilman Khemraj “Chico” Ramchal, 39, was charged with drunken driving around 12:30 Saturday after a three-car collision near West Side and Communipaw avenues, according to various news reports.
NJ.com reported that witnesses said he allegedly ran a red light, causing the accident. The news site said he called the matter a “very unfortunate accident.”
Ramchal, who was elected to the council in 2013, said he wouldn’t attend Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in that city.
He is not the first area councilman to have to address incidents related to alcohol. Former Jersey City councilman Steve Lipski suffered an embarrassing incident years ago. Former Hoboken Councilman Chris Campos had to deal with a stop for alleged drunk driving in New York City during his re-election bid, which ultimately failed.
In fact, several Hudson County politicians have had to address alleged alcohol related incidents. See the Reporter’s award winning story on the nexus between Hudson County politics and alcohol here.
