North Bergen resident struck and killed by off-duty West New York policeman

A 28-year-old North Bergen man was crossing Kennedy Boulevard at about 70th Street on Monday, March 30 at 11:46 p.m. when he was struck by a 2013 Honda Accord driven by a West New York policeman on his way to work. North Bergen EMS responded to a 911 call and transported the victim, a Guatemalan national, to Palisades Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before noon on Tuesday morning.
According to a statement from Hudson County Sheriff Frank X. Schillari, the West New York policeman “immediately stopped and rendered assistance to the injured man, who was in cardiac arrest.” A passing Guttenberg police car passing by the scene also stopped to assist, finding the man “lying face down on the sidewalk, unconscious and bleeding from his head.”
“The Hudson County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit states that the Honda does not appear to have been speeding and the victim was approximately 70 feet away from the nearest crosswalk when he was struck,” the statement continued. “He was also wearing dark clothing and the area is not well lit. The driver of the car was also transported to Palisades Medical Center for shock and has been released. The accident is still under investigation.”

North Bergen resident Karina Voronich, a senior at High Tech High School, has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, on behalf of President Barack Obama, granted this award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Elaine Samman, president of Animal Life Savers, Inc., nominated Voronich this fall in recognition of her volunteer service dedicated to the health and safety of domestic pets and her chairpersonship in the High School Division of Hudson County.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), recognizes middle level and high school students across America for outstanding volunteer service.
“The recipients of these awards demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “By recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community.”
In the past, Voronich has also received a 2012 Young Science Achievers Program (YSAP) grant, received Honorable Mention in the 2014 St. Joseph’s College Research Poster Session, and First Place in the 2014 Seton Hall Project SEED Poster Session.

Liberty Humane Society opens new Spay/Neuter clinic

Non-profit animal shelter Liberty Humane Society has announces the opening of its own dedicated spay/neuter clinic. Liberty Humane Society is the animal shelter for Jersey City, Bayonne, and Hoboken, and has a strict spay-neuter policy, meaning all animals are altered before adoption. This is done to ease the financial and logistic burden of spay/neuter on adopters and to reduce the number of unwanted pets born through accidental litters of puppies and kittens.
Prior to the clinic opening LHS was forced to transport adoptable animals 80 miles each way to a partner clinic.
LHS’s own clinic is housed in a customized RV, fully equipped, on LHS grounds. Staffed by experienced and specialized veterinarians and technicians, the shelter will now be able to spay or neuter adoptable animals on site. The first day of operation, on Wednesday, March 25, saw the safe and effective alteration of five of the shelter’s animals. While access to the clinic is only available for animals in the shelter’s care at this time, shelter officials hope to grow the clinic’s capacity to eventually serve other local shelters and rescues and to help in TNR efforts.
