The nine-member forensics team from Saint Dominic Academy’s 7th and 8th grades won a third-place team trophy at the Forensics Tournament held at Hudson Catholic Regional High School in Jersey City on Saturday, March 28. It was the second time the academy entered a team into the competition.
In addition to the third-place team trophy, the following students achieved finalist status: Duo Teams, Caitlin Aristizabal of Secaucus and Courtney Malden, of Jersey City and Evi Iordamlis of Weehawken and Cassiday LoCascio of Essex Fells; Oral Interpretation, Gianna Farulla of Bayonne and in Dramatic Interpretation, Sophia Baldassari of Hoboken. The team was coached by SDA’s 7th and 8th grade program coordinator Mary Ann McLean.
Honor Society Inductions
Twenty-six Saint Dominic Academy, Jersey City, students were recently inducted into the following World Language Honor Societies: Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, Societe Honoraire de Francais and Chinese Honor Society.
The ceremony, held at the academy on Thursday, March 26, was co-presided over by Head of School Barbara Griffin and Bernadette Costanzo, chair of the World Language Department.
The new members of the Chinese Honor Society include sophomores Erin Bailey of West Orange and Danielle Dompor of Jersey City.
The Societe Honoraire de Francais inducted eight new members, including senior Toni Giacchi of Hoboken and juniors, Sara Angrosina and Daniella Magcalas, both of Bayonne and Carolina Creamer, Alyssa Roaquin, Christina Trinidad, Christine Valbuena and Jennifer Valencia, all of Jersey City.
Sophomores Bryanna Mendez of Clifton and Aolanie Vargas of Jersey City are among the sixteen newly inducted members of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica. Other new members include juniors Kimberly Arana, Francesca Dell ‘Acqua, Melissa Jaikissoon, Jennifer Leon, and Jade Perez, all of Jersey City, Amanda Gaccione and Gianna Tanner of Secaucus, Marlene daCruz of Lyndhurst, Enelisse Hernandez of North Bergen, Michelle Huertas of Cliffside Park, Purnima Prasad of Wood-Ridge, Mariel Santos of Belleville and Destiny Foster and Marissa Pinto, both of Hasbrouck Heights.
To be eligible to become members of these Honor Societies, the students are required to maintain a 3.5 (A) average in the first five semesters of their study of the language (or three semesters for Chinese), as well as a 2.5 or better overall average /G.P.A in every semester. The students are also required to demonstrate service to the school and/or community.
After the induction official ceremony, the new and current members of each Honor Society performed presentations in Chinese, French and Spanish for the audience, which included family and faculty members. Refreshments were served.
