Playing in front of a packed house, the (3-0) Penguins and the (2-1) Devils took to the court to battle for the top spot in the JCC of Bayonne Sr. Division Floor Hockey League. Like two gunfighters in an old time western, the Devils’ Colin Woods and the Penguins’ Matt Doyle readied for a sundown duel as they stalked the nets. With the leagues’ two best goalies dug in, the game stormed out to a defensive slugfest as the Feeley sisters, Caitlin and Megan, joined forces with the “Radilators” Drew and Jared Radil to hold the line for the Penguins while the Devils’ Allen “Lefty” McComb, Logan Mazziota, Chloe Gregory, and the Jacob Kowal turned their zone into a “no man’s land”. Brawling to a scoreless tie for twenty minutes, the Penguins’ James Bajor bulled in the game’s first goal off an assist by Megan Feeley. Hoping to tie the bout, the Devils sent their big man John Bautista up into the Penguins’ ranks but the “Pens” held tough with Kasper Hooks and Alejandro Cifuentes clearing the zone. Leading 1-0, the Penguins stretched their lead to 2-0 when Bajor assisted Drew Radil on an off speed scoring pop. Working against the clock, the Devils got their fans fired up as Marek Mickiewicz fought a pass to Mackenzie Woods who made it 2-1 Penguins with just three minutes remaining. Facing a barrage of shots, the Penguins’ Matt Doyle stood the test as the Penguins prevailed for a 2-1 victory.
