Secaucus educators and PBA Local 84 square off to support D.A.R.E.

SECAUCUS – Educators from the town are teaming up with P.B.A. Local 84 police to make Secaucus students aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol use. A fund raiser basketball game between members of Secaucus police and educators will take place on Wednesday, May 13 to build awareness for D.A.R.E. (drug abuse resistance education).
Sergeant Martin Moreda will field a team of Secaucus’s finest against a team of Secaucus educators led by Clarendon’s principal, Steve Viggiani, in this “fun raiser” event. Viggiani has enlisted the athletic skills of educators from Clarendon, Huber, and Secaucus Middle and High Schools.
Many of these men and women grew up together so the game should be spirited. The event will take place at the Secaucus High School gym beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the schools and at the police department in town hall. The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Proceeds from the event are retained by the schools and P.B.A. Local 84 for educational purposes and projects of their choosing.
In an effort to build awareness, a poster contest was opened to all students. Based on the creativity shown in the poster, five students will receive one adult and one student ticket to the game.
Research shows first marijuana usage can start at age 14. Alcohol is even lower at age 12. The use of illegal drugs is increasing, especially among teens. Alcohol abuse is also on the rise. As part of drug abuse resistance education, members of D.A.R.E. and Secaucus educators held meetings with students in early May.
