Today is Election Day in North Bergen, West New York

NORTH HUDSON – After a highly contentious election season filled with accusations, allegations, and lawsuits among various candidates, the polls are open today in North Bergen and West New York from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Residents will be turning out to choose five commissioners in each municipality. The winners will then select the mayor from among themselves.
In North Bergen, 11 candidates are running for the five seats. Incumbent Mayor Nicholas “Nick” Sacco is running on a ticket with current Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Frank Gargiulo, and Allen Pascual, joined by current Board of Education President Julio Marenco. Marenco would replace former Commissioner Theresa Ferraro, who passed away earlier this year.
Competing against Sacco’s team for commissioner seats are Lawrence “Larry” Wainstein, heading up the Lower Taxes – Time for Change ticket, alongside candidates Juan Almanzar, Veronica Castrillon, Eduardo Cespedes, and Alcides Siri.
Running independently in the North Bergen election is Police Sergeant Enrique “Henry” Marrero.
In West New York, three full tickets are running for office, as well as several independents.
Mayor Dr. Felix Roque, who is seeking reelection, is running with four completely new candidates from when he first ran in 2011. These include Margarita Guzman, a former commissioner on the West New York Housing Authority, as well as Cosmo Cirillo, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Susan Colacurcio.
Opposing Roque’s slate is the West New York United ticket headed by his former ally, Commissioner Dr. Count J. Wiley, along with Carlos Betancourt, Myrli Sanchez, Hector Hernandez, and Thomas Leung.
A third full ticket called Hope for the Future includes Michael Corso, Anthony DeFino (the son of former Mayor Anthony DeFino), Gabriela Reynoso, Armando Galis-Menendez, and Maria Melendez.
Two independent candidates, Juan Espinal and Patrick R. Cullen Jr., are running together in a partial ticket. Running on his own for commissioner is Jose Rosario.
