Bayonne firefighters respond to fuel leak from truck

BAYONNE – The Bayonne Fire Department responded to the report of an overturned tractor-trailer at the Rt. 440 southbound loop near the entrance of Rutkowski Park on May 20 at about 2:30 p.m.
Arriving firefighters encountered an overturned Peterbuilt tractor and 20-foot trailer, filled with building materials, in the road’s shoulder, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
“The fuel saddle tank was crushed under the cab and ruptured, causing diesel fuel to leak onto the soil at roadside,” Rogers said.
Firefighters disconnected the vehicle power and contained the fuel leak.
The vehicle’s owner arrived at the scene, and hired a remediation crew for cleanup and the righting of the vehicle.
The driver, who was reported uninjured, had evacuated the truck prior to the arrival of emergency crews.
