Mayor announces road improvements

The city is undertaking improvements to local infrastructure, including major upgrades to its streets, Mayor James Davis announced on May 29.
The work has begun with the resurfacing of Orient Street from East 5th Street to Linnet Street, according to Davis, because the area was in “dire need of repair.”
In anticipation of undertaking an extensive roads program this year, the city applied for and received more than $600,000 from state and federal grants. That amount will be combined with an additional $600,000 allocated as part of the bond ordinance recently adopted by the City Council, for a $1.2 million total dedicated to street resurfacing.
“In recent memory, this is the largest amount allocated to resurfacing side streets,” said Public Works Director Gary Chmielewski.
As soon as engineers finalize the plans, the city will put the work out to bid. Depending on the bids received back, between 40 and 50 blocks will be resurfaced, Chmielewski said.
“Roadway infrastructure directly impacts the quality of life in Bayonne,” Davis said. “Therefore, ensuring that we institute a roads program that reflects the necessity for solid infrastructure is a necessity.”

Farmers Market open at new location

The Bayonne Farmers Market is back, bringing fresh produce and other services to city residents.

New municipal website goes live

The city of Bayonne has launched a new website to better serve the public, Mayor James Davis announced on May 27.
“In this day and age we need to be sure that we maximize the use of all media outlets so that information flows freely into and out of City Hall,” Davis said. “My administration has made this a priority, and the launch of the new website continues this effort.”
The launch of the site comes after months of preparation, data gathering, and design by the city’s webmaster in coordination with the administration, city departments, and city hall employees.
“We are really encouraging everyone to check out the new site and let us know what you think,” Chief of Staff Andrew Casais said. “We tried to get all of the important stuff right up front, but the public’s input is crucial, because they are the ones who will be using the site.”
The new homepage includes “Community Events” and “Upcoming Meetings” calendars, recent municipal budgets and city audits, and the latest information on the New Jersey Turnpike 14A Exchange and Bayonne Bridge “Raise the Roadway” construction projects.
The web address will remain the same: www.bayonnenj.org. Feedback can be sent to mayors.office@baynj.org.
