Overheated refrigerator motor cause of fire

BAYONNE – An overheated refrigerator motor was the cause of a two-alarm fire over the weekend that did extensive damage to a 26th Street home, a fire official said on June 29.
Bayonne firefighters responded to a blaze at 197 West 26th St. a little after 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
“Arriving firefighters were confronted with smoke throughout the one-story frame building, and heavy smoke pushing from the attic space,” Rogers said in a statement.
Firefighters extinguished the fire in a kitchen on the first floor and a portion of the basement.
No occupants were home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries.
There was fire damage to the kitchen cabinets, walls, and floor, according to Rogers. The building also suffered smoke and water damage throughout it.
“The fire investigator determined that the fire originated in the kitchen, and was caused by an overheated electrical refrigerator motor,” Rogers said.
