July 4 experience

Dear Editor:
It was a joy to experience Liberty State Park on July 4th seeing the beautiful diversity of people enjoying the park together behind Lady Liberty.
I felt great pride as an American, a Jersey City resident, and as the son of Morris Pesin, LSPs father who envisioned in 1957, the transformation of the shameful and desolate waterfront wasteland into a non-commercialized open space Peoples Park.
The awesome fireworks, one set in front of the Freedom Tower and the other in front of Lady Liberty, was inspiring beyond words.
Thanks to JC Mayor Steve Fulop and the JC Division of Cultural Affairs and LSP Superintendent Rob Rodriguez and Deputy Superintendent Jon Luk and all the city and park employees for their collaboration and hard work. The JC music program and carnival rides and food added to the holiday fun.
Governor Christie’s administration wants to privatize chunks of LSP and park supporters will be needed in a grassroots effort to protect this priceless urban park for future generations.
Please give the Friends of LSP your email address at www.folsp.org to help in this coming battle.
Also, at the website, please check the schedule of the 39th year of Summerfest, Jersey City’s free Tuesday and Sunday evening concert series at the northern end of the park.
God bless America, Jersey City and our free and green LSP!

Sam Pesin
President of The Friends of Liberty State Park
