Jersey City opens cooling centers

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the Jersey City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) announced that the City is keeping open three cooling sites on Monday, July 20 as temperatures are expected to reach into the high 90s. The sites will be open for the remainder of the heat wave if temperatures exceed 90 degrees.
The Mary McLeod Bethune Community Center, 140 Martin Luther King Drive, will be open until 9 p.m.today for residents to cool off from the heat, and the Joseph Connors Senior Center, at 28 Paterson Street, andthe Maureen Collier Senior Center, at 335 Bergen Avenue, will be open until 6 p.m.
All residents, especially the elderly, disabled people, pregnant women and children under the age of two are encouraged to stay indoors or take advantage of the cooling facilities if necessary.
“As we continue to experience high heat and humidity, we are keeping open our cooling centers as a place for our residents to find relief,” said Mayor Fulop. “Special attention should be paid to small children and seniors during these conditions and residents should stay hydrated and avoid prolonged activities in the heat.”
