Author returns for ‘60 Minutes’ shoot
Fantasy writer George R.R. Martin, who was born and raised in Bayonne, returned to his hometown on Thursday, Aug. 6 to shoot footage for a segment about him for an upcoming telecast of “60 Minutes.”
Martin is the author of the fantasy epic “A Song of Ice and Fire,” brought to the television screen as “Game of Thrones” by HBO in 2011. His earlier TV work included the second “Twilight Zone” series and the first “Beauty and the Beast.”
During his day, Martin stopped by Mary J. Donohoe Grammar School on Fifth Street, the First Street Projects where he grew up, and San Vito Pizzeria on Broadway, where he had lunch with Mayor James Davis and Business Administrator Joseph DeMarco.
Martin was on Barbara Walters’ 2014 list of the 10 most fascinating people of the year.
Police make arrest in July hit-and-run
Bayonne police arrested a Staten Island man on Aug. 4 relating to a hit-and-run accident that occurred last month.
Andrew Saviolis, 31, was taken into custody after police identified him as allegedly driving a car that struck a man on July 11 at the ramp from Rt. 440 to the New Jersey Turnpike, according to Capt. Robert Geisler. The driver was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was in critical condition for several days.
After Bayonne police began working with the New York Police Department, the Bayonne detectives were able to track the vehicle to a body shop in Staten Island.
Saviolis was charged with knowingly leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury and endangering an injured victim.
His bail was set at $50,000, with a 10-percent cash option. He was remanded to the Hudson County Jail.
Geisler lauded the work of Dets. Andrew Quinn and Dan Murphy, and Det. Sgt. Tim Wilgus.
CarePoint announces new surgery residency
CarePoint Health has announced that CarePoint Health-Bayonne Medical Center will serve as the host platform for the launching of a new general surgery residency program, under the leadership of the system’s chief academic officer and leader of its educational programs, Dr. Maurizio Miglietta.
The general surgery residency program has recruited six residents, with Dr. Thomas Simpson serving as the residency program director. The general surgery residents will be assisting on teaching service cases and covering on-call shifts throughout CarePoint Health System.
“This new educational initiative emphasizes our goal to foster physicians’ professional development as skilled, ethical, and compassionate clinicians, capable of meeting the challenges of a changing healthcare environment and assuring high quality patient care in our communities,” said CarePoint Health System Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nizar Kifaieh.
Bayonne Fury travel softball holding tryouts
The Bayonne Fury Inc., a not-for-profit travel fast pitch softball organization, will be holding tryouts this weekend at DiDomenico Park/16th Street Park.
The tryouts are on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 11 a.m. for 10U and 1 p.m. for 12U.
On Sunday, it will be 11 a.m. for 14U and 1 p.m. for 16U.
Participants must go to the tryouts page on the team website, www.bayonnefurysoftball.com, and register in advance.
Bayonne Bridge to be closed over next few days
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced closures of the Bayonne Bridge as part of the “Raise the Roadway” Navigational Clearance Project.
The remaining multi-hour closures for this week are: Wednesday, Aug. 12 from 8:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13; Thursday, Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14; Friday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. until 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 16.
Closures are weather dependent.
