National Night Out brings awareness, entertainment

Thousands of community members flooded Union City’s streets on Aug. 4 to celebrate National Night Out – the 32nd annual nationwide celebration that discourages criminal activity by uniting public service officers with locals in a fun and festive way.
The event was largely held on Bergenline Avenue. Mayor Brian Stack and the commissioners were on hand along with law enforcement personnel from the Union City Police Department, the Bergen County Sherriff’s Office, and fire officials.
On Bergenline, 22nd to 30th streets were closed off to traffic to make way for bounce houses and inflatable slides, a mechanical bull, a small carousel, a rock climb, fire trucks, and emergency vehicles on display. There were even real farm animals. Several bands and musicians performed Latin tunes.
On a clear night, couples danced in the open spaces on the sidewalks and shut down streets. Children waved hand-held toys that lit up the night. Festivities wrapped up around 10 p.m.
