Coast Guard: majority of spill cleaned up
The Coast Guard said that less than 1,000 gallons of oil spilled onto an International Matex Tank Terminal pier and nearby water when a tugboat hit a pier on Saturday night, Aug. 1, according to a published report.
The nj.com report also quoted the U.S. Coast Guard as saying that the majority of the oil that spilled has been cleaned up.
The Coast Guard was notified at about 10 p.m. that day by IMTT crew members of the oil spill resulting from the accident.
Members of the Coast Guard Pollution Response Team were immediately dispatched to investigate.
The Coast Guard responders and IMTT crew members placed a containment boom, a temporary floating barrier, into the water and stopped the oil from spreading farther.
Coast Guard crews continue to monitor the spill and assist IMTT contractors in recovering the remaining oil from the water.
Devils play angel to fire victim
Akiel Fogoe, 17, a goaltender for the Bayonne High School hockey team, lost everything—including his hockey gear— in the fire that ripped through his family’s home at 77 East 21st Street on July 11. The blaze killed two of his upstairs neighbors.
Enter the New Jersey Devils. The team, assisted by BHS, social media, and CCM, one of the largest hockey suppliers in North America, donated Fogoe a brand-new set of goaltending equipment, which allowed him to attend hockey camp this summer.
Leo J. Smith, Bayonne Board of Education’s assistant superintendent/business administrator, told the Bayonne Community News: “The Devils organization stepped up to make one child feel good. It speaks volumes about the Devils. I’m very, very pleased. It was also nice to see the community come together for the benefit of a child, as Bayonne always does.”
