Labor Day: Hoboken woman gives birth near Lincoln Tunnel in Uber car

HOBOKEN — Oh, those Hoboken moms who go to New York to deliver. They always leave their friends wondering, “Well, what if you run into traffic in the tunnel?”
It’s not such a far-fetched question to ask. Especially if you go into labor during rush hour.
According to Crain’s New York and other media outlets, on Tuesday around 5:15 p.m. (gulp), a 32-year-old Hoboken woman was heading into the Big City in an Uber vehicle to go to the hospital and give birth.
But luckily, before they were able to penetrate the tunnel and get stuck midway through the canal, the woman realized she couldn’t wait any longer. The Uber driver got the attention of Port Authority police officers. (Considering that Uber drivers sometimes have to ask for directions around Hoboken, it’s impressive he knew how to find the officers hanging out by their cars at the mouth of the tunnel.)
“The Port Authority says an employee delivered a healthy baby in just minutes. It was the second baby senior agent Greg Nimmo has delivered while working for the authority,” says Crain’s. “The mother, who had been traveling to the hospital from Hoboken, New Jersey, was transported to a hospital along with her new daughter.”
Uber ID’d the driver as Erick Rodriguez.
And what prize does E-Rod get for his heroic act? Tickets to a Yankee game. Big whoop. Isn’t he already in the infield?
The new mother gets an “Uber onesie” and a free ride home from the hospital, presumably in Uber. For that kind of publicity, they should at least give her an Uber Exersaucer.
It’s not known if the meter was left running, but the process was surely less expensive than an epidural.
According to the report, Uber New Jersey General Manager Ana Mahony said, “Uber is fast becoming the go-to option for expecting parents who need a reliable ride to the hospital,.”
Don’t read into it.
