Alonso speaks out

To the Editor:

I decided to run for the School Board because I believe that Bayonne’s School System needs to educate our students more effectively, and spend our tax dollars more efficiently. We need to be more competitive with our school contracts and
get more for our money.
I also believe that our outlook on standards needs to change. We need to let teachers do their job and educate our next generation. Our classrooms should be places of learning, not standardized testing. Accordingly, PARCC needs to go.
It should not be used as a reason to waste our tax dollars by adding more unnecessary Assistant Superintendents to the payroll at exorbitantly high salaries.
The purpose of a school system is to educate school children, not overpay unneeded
school bureaucrats and repay political favors.
I started the movement to have an elected school board three years ago because I knew people wanted a choice. I also know that Bayonne deserves a better, more independent and transparent School Board. That is what we fought for, and that is what we can achieve. Come November, School Board candidates will be on Column D on the right hand side of the ballot, and you will be asked to vote for 5 of them and elect a majority of the new Board.
This November will also be our first chance to stop Common Core in our schools by electing the right people who will listen to parents and teachers and create our own standards. Standards that will be applicable to our town, and not a one size fits all experiment.
Join me in the fight to save Bayonne’s students from this expensive and risky unproven
experiment that will damage the academic future of our City’s youth. We need a new and independent School Board. We need Common Sense, not Common Core.
