Bayonne firefighters respond to call on ship

BAYONNE – The Bayonne Fire Department responded to a car fire aboard a ship at the Ports America ship terminal at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor on Friday, Oct. 2 just after 9 a.m.
“Arriving firefighters determined that a small fire occurred in the engine compartment and was put out by ship crew members with a fire extinguisher,” said Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
The ship, the Grande Marocco, was reportedly being loaded with vehicles at the time of the fire.
The investigator determined that the car fire was accidental and was the result of an electrical short.
The fire was confined to the vehicle’s engine compartment and caused little damage, Rogers said.
