Firefighters battle two-alarmer in Bayonne

BAYONNE – Bayonne firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire fed by a gas leak early on Tuesday, Oct. 6, a fire official said.
The Bayonne Fire Department was dispatched to 7 Sisson Court at 7 a.m. after receiving a report of smoke in the building.
Firefighters confronted fire in the utility room and nearby kitchen, and additional fire in the crawlspace below the building that was being fed by a gas line, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
“Firefighters had to cut the floors open in order to gain access to the crawlspace fire, and were further impeded by large amounts of storage in the building,” Rogers said.
One female occupant and a cat were home at the time of the fire.
“The woman smelled smoke and witnessed fire near the floor in the utility room, and unsuccessfully attempted to extinguish it before fleeing the building,” Rogers said. “She was exposed to some smoke, but reportedly refused medical attention.”
There were no other reports of injuries.
The building sustained fire, smoke, and water damage, and was determined unfit to be reoccupied.
The investigator reported that the fire originated in the utility room area, and was the result of a natural gas leak from a corroded gas line that was found in the crawl space below the building, according to Rogers.
The fire was under control within one hour.
