On Thursday, October 8, which is National Depression Screening Day, Jersey City Medical Center, a Barnabas Health facility, will host a free, confidential depression screening from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the hospital’s main lobby located at 355 Grand St.
Clinical depression is a serious medical illness and is not a normal part of life. One in four women and one in 10 men will experience depression at some point in their lifetime and two-thirds of those who suffer from the illness do not seek the necessary treatment.
Participants will receive materials on depression and other mental illnesses, complete a written screening test, discuss the results with a mental health professional and, if necessary, learn where to go for additional help.
Common symptoms of depression include a persistent feeling of sadness, anxiety or “emptiness;” a lack of sleep; reduced appetite and weight loss (or increased appetite and weight gain); loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed; restlessness or irritability; and/or difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions.
