Two Bayonne men killed on Route 440 Monday night

BAYONNE – Two city residents were struck and killed in the middle of Route 440 in Bayonne on Monday, Nov. 2, at about 11:15 p.m., a police spokesman said.
The pedestrians, 25 and 20 years old, were crossing the roadway on 32nd Street from east to west when they were hit, according to Bayonne Police Lt. Franco Amato.
The men had cleared the northbound lanes, and were crossing the southbound lanes when a red Toyota Camry, driven by another Bayonne man, struck them. The two pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Camry’s driver stopped and stayed at the accident scene.
Amato said police were reviewing surveillance video from the site. He also said five witnesses gave statements.
No charges have been filed against the driver, pending the conclusion of the investigation, Amato said.
Route 440 was closed late Monday night, but was reopened for the morning commute.
The incident is still under investigation. –Joseph Passantino
