Man’s shooting death in Jersey City deli leads police to a different kind of evidence

JERSEY CITY — A 23-year-old man was shot to death on Ocean Avenue on Nov. 15 at about 1 a.m. Jersey City police responded to Los Yoleros Mini Market Deli on the report of a man shot, and discovered the victim inside the deli with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m. on the scene.
The owner and co-owner of the deli and one employee were arrested for allegedly tampering with physical evidence and possession of gambling records after the police found evidence of an alleged gambling operation inside the store.
Police said they believe the victim’s body was moved by deli store personnel. But the three arrested are not believed to be involved with the actual shooting.
No arrests have yet been made in connection with the actual homicide, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating the murder. A motive for the murder has not yet been identified.
The Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office at (201) 915-1345. All calls will be kept confidential.
