UNION CITY – Union City expects over 1,000 people at its annual ceremony and dinner to honor the 240th anniversary of the Marine Corps and the 20th anniversary of the Union City ROTC on Saturday, Nov. 14.
“We celebrate the Marine Corps birthday every year and it just happened that the ROTC’s 20th anniversary happen at the same time,” said Gunnery Sgt. Caonabo Reyes, who heads the ROTC program at Union City High School.
“The ROTC program is our most successful and rewarding for the youth,” said Reyes, noting that program includes about 400 students. “It teaches them discipline, respect, and becoming good citizens. The ROTC [teaches] personal growth and also the importance of public service. Last year alone we did 5,000 hours of community service.”
Mayor Brian Stack, current Logistics Manager at Marine at Marine Corps Junior ROTC in Washington D.C, as well as other luminaries will attend the ceremony at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. at Union City High School.
“This will be our largest ceremony yet,” added Reyes.
