HUDSON COUNTY – Christopher Frias, a senior at Union City High School, and Jackson Weaver, a junior at Jersey City’s McNair Academic High School, will head to Phoenix this Sunday to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
The young scientists punched their tickets to the prestigious event by emerging as the top two competitors in the 2016 Jersey City Medical Center/Barnabas Health STEM Showcase, held in February at Liberty Science Center.
Christopher and Jackson will be among approximately 1,700 high school students representing over 75 countries, regions and territories. Each will present his independent research project to visiting judges.
The Intel ISEF presents almost $4 million in prizes and awards. Area students have fared well over the years – many young researchers, including Bayonne’s Eric Delgado and Union City’s Mervy Michael, have brought home medals, awards and pride to Hudson County.
Opening events include a traditional pin-exchange, during which students meet their counterparts from across the globe and trade pins representing their home science competitions.
The program also includes workshops and speakers for educators who accompany their students to Intel ISEF. Science Supervisors Nadia Makar of Union City and Manisha Shah of Jersey City will attend this year’s program along with McNair Academic High School’s science fair coordinator Emma Osoria.
Students will compete during the week and enjoy down time to explore Phoenix. Christopher and Jackson will return to Hudson County on May 13.
