Meadowlands ski and snowboard resort coming in 2017
MEADOWLANDS — “Big SNOW America,” a 12-story, 180,000 square foot indoor ski and Snowboard Park, is coming to East Rutherford, as announced on Monday May 16 by Triple Five, the developers of the Meadowlands Project. It will be part of the American Dream retail/entertainment complex (formerly called Xanadu). The complex experienced delays, but Triple Five still expects the $3 billion mega-mall to open in 2017.
The ski and snowboard park features lessons, ski chalets, an après ski lounge, snow tubing, indoor snow play, and an event space. The facility will be surrounded by “The Shops @ Big SNOW,” ski and snowboard retail stores.
American Dream Meadowlands, a retail and entertainment complex in East Rutherford, teamed up with Triple Five for this project to provide fun in the snow all year long.
American Dream has recruited businesses and entertainment options to fill its directory such as Lego Land, an aquarium, and a 4D dine-in movie theater.
Click-it or Ticket campaign May 23 to June 5
The Secaucus Police Department received grant money to implement a targeted seat belt enforcement called Click-it or Ticket that will be occurring through June 5 to bring awareness to the fact that seatbelts save lives.
Mayor Gonnelli and the council encourage all motorists in a vehicle, even children or adults in the back seat, to wear seatbelts while on the roadways in Secaucus.
Police Department acquires new radio communications May 9
On Monday May 9, police Chief Kevin Flaherty announced the Secaucus Police Department acquired new State of the Art Motorola Police Radio Systems. The PD has been working with Mayor Gonnelli for the past year to make upgrades following numerous documents radio failures with the hand held radios officers carry.
Chief Flaherty said the new portable radios allow the Officers to communicate directly with Fire Personnel, O.E.M. Personnel, and DPW Personnel as well as the State Police Emergency Network in cases of major emergency.
He added, “The new system provides crystal clear radio transmissions from both the car and portable radios at any location within the town. The new system is also more resilient against weather related emergencies and disasters and has a projected twenty year life span.”
Environmental Club ‘plants’ bird houses in Mill Creek Marsh
Twelve members of the Secaucus Middle School Environmental Club took a trip with their parents to Mill Creek Marsh Saturday May 14. They met at the marsh to “plant” 22 bird houses they, and other members who couldn’t attend, made in school. Some students personalized the houses by painting them.
The club started doing this a little over two years ago in an effort to help the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission in providing nesting areas for tree swallows. Tree swallows are an important mosquito-eating marsh bird that lives in the area. Since the club started doing this they’ve built over 200 bird houses for Mill Creek Marsh or Mill Creek Point.
Stephen Strobert Foundations race on June 4
Tickets are available for the Steven Strobert Foundation’s “Day at Monmouth Race Track” on Saturday, June 4. Gates to the track open at 11 a.m. and the first race is at 1 p.m. The money raised at the event will be used to benefit the Foundation’s “School Back Pack Program for Needy Children.”
Strobert was a Secaucus resident, brother, husband, and father before his death on 9/11, according to the Foundation’s President Mark Deenert. He said, “The Foundation was formed in memory of Steven Strobert, who tragically lost his life on September 11, 2001.”
Dehnert added, “Also, each person attending is asked to bring one item that would normally be carried in a child’s school backpack.”
Tickets include admission, trackside seating, BBQ, snacks, beer and soda. The cost for an adult, 21 years of age and older is $50. The ticket price for those 12 to 20 years old is $20 and the cost for those ages 8 to 11 is $10. Children under the age of 8 years old can attend for free.
To purchase tickets, include a note detailing the number of tickets requested for the individual age groups, the number of children under age 8 attending, and a check in the appropriate amount made payable to the Strobert Foundation. Secaucus Middle School student wins first place statewide
Eighth grade English as a Second Language student Daniel Martinez took home first place for his essay about an experience he’s had because he’s bilingual. The state-wide writing completion and prize was offered by the New Jersey Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages/New Jersey Bilingual Educators.
NJTESOL/NJBE is an association of educators and administrators instructing English.
Martinez wrote in his essay about the struggles his family faces, and how he helps them while still learning English himself. He won a tablet PC and will attend the NJTESOL awards dinner in New Brunswick.
Hands-on workshop held for pre-algebra students
Secaucus Middle School students learned about cross-sections with a hands-on approach involving cylinder or rectangular prism-shaped food. A cross-section, in upper level geometry, geology, or anatomy, is a two-dimensional shape that is created when a solid and a plane intersect.
Students in groups of two agreed upon food items to bring to school. Students brought in Jello to represent cylinders or pound cake to represent rectangular prisms. Then they performed horizontal, vertical, and angled slices with their plastic utensils to represent the cross-sections. This provided a visual for cross-sections that were not parallel or perpendicular. They all successfully identified the cross-sections of their solids.
High School valedictorian and salutatorian honored at Le Reggia
The Secaucus High School valedictorian and salutatorian were honored at the 29th annual Hudson County Academic Achievement Recognition Program at La Reggia Restaurant. The program recognizes academic achievements in students throughout Hudson County. This year they honored each valedictorian and salutatorian from each of Hudson County’s public and charter high schools.
Salutatorian Hannah Faye Canonigo will attend Rutgers University in September, and Valedictorian Brandon Halpin will attend New York University when he graduates.
