was called from his labor to his reward at home on July 24, 2016, surrounded by his family. Fred was born in 1930 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Fred enlisted in the United States Army as an Engineer in the Special Services with a two- year tour of duty in Germany. Fred graduated from Claflin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina, in 1957 with a B.S. degree in physical and health education. Fred married his high school sweetheart Susan L. Jackson in 1951 then relocated with his family to Bayonne in 1957. Fred retired from the Bayonne Board of Education after 30 years. Fred was a member of the George E. Cannon Brotherhood and an active congregant of the Claremont-Lafayette United Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Finance Committee of the Black Presbyterian Caucus; past Vice-President of the Bayonne NAACP; Chairman of the Bayonne Memorial Day Committee in 1968 and 1984; trustee to the Bayonne Youth Center; and secretary/trustee of the Pride of Bayonne Elks Lodge #461, later becoming Exalted Ruler of Lodge #461. He was an active member of the Flourney-Gethers Post #7470 V.F.W., National Education Association, New Jersey Education Association, Hudson County Education Association, and the Bayonne Teachers Association. Fred was elected the first African-American Commander of the Hudson County Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1974. Fred was predeceased by his parents Harvey and Josephine (MaJoe) Brown and his eldest son, Fred Brown, Jr. Surviving him are his wife of 65 years, Susan L. (Jackson) Brown; his children Patrice (Julius) Wyman (South Carolina), Le Roy Brown, Karen Brown (Ohio), Michael Brown (New York), Suzanne (Manuel) Sambade, and daughter-in-law, Ramona Brown; sister-in-law Barbara Young (South Carolina); two uncles, Buster Grant (Victoria) (South Carolina), and Marcus Jackson (Jersey City). He also leaves to cherish his memory 13 grandchildren, 17 great- grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
