New community association for Journal Square residents – the New JSQ

The New JSQ Community Association will hold its first general meeting on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. at the Old Bergen Church, 1 Highland Ave. at the corner of Bergen Avenue. The association will represent the interests of residents and owners of residential property within the boundaries defined by the group in its by-laws.
The New JSQ’s goals are summarized by its slogan “Clean, Green, and Safe” – clean streets, sidewalks and alleys, beautification such as more flowers and murals, an environmentally friendly neighborhood, and a sharp reduction in crime.
This new association is forming at a time of tremendous change about to take place in Journal Square with the construction of new skyscrapers expected to bring thousands of new residents into the area over the next several years, according to the association’s founding trustees and interim officers. They are Bill Armbruster, president; Jeanette Rodriguez, vice president; Renee Tirella Cassidy, secretary; Mark Weller, treasurer; and Irina Zaki, assistant secretary.
Besides the three principal goals expressed by its slogan, The New JSQ plans to address other issues, such as affordable housing and infrastructure, with the exact agenda to be determined by the membership over the next several months.
The founders have been laying the groundwork for The New JSQ since late last year, working in conjunction with officials from the Journal Square Special Improvement District. The SID represents business owners. Armbruster, a Journal Square area resident for the past 28 years, pointed out that businesses and residents have interests that are generally similar, although not identical.
The New JSQ plans to hold general membership meetings the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. It will elect permanent officers and four at-large trustees in several months.
The New JSQ’s boundaries are Summit Avenue on the east, Corbin Avenue on the west, Newark Avenue on the south, and Vroom Street and DeKalb Avenue on the north.

The free tree is provided to the applicant after participation in one of the tree care workshops scheduled for what the JCPC is dubbing Octreeber, a month long celebration of tree awareness and planting events.
The workshops will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Bethune Center; Sunday, Oct. 9 at Harsimus Cemetery; and Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Riverview Farmer’s Market.
