Disappearance of 25-year-old woman has police baffled

Weehawken police are investigating the mysterious disappearance of a 25-year-old Cooper Place woman who has been missing for 10 days. According to Weehawken Deputy Police Chief Robert Del Priore, Sandra Fernandez was reported missing on Feb. 16 by her father after she didn’t show up for work for a few days. “According to her father, he said that he didn’t see her or hear from her for a few days,” Del Priore said. “Apparently, she stopped showing up for work, so her co-workers called her father and informed him of what happened. He lives in New York, so he then came in to us and filed the missing person’s report.” Del Priore said that there are very confusing circumstances surrounding the case. Fernandez apparently went to the bank on the morning of Feb. 16 and withdrew all her savings. Her car was found deserted by her friends near North Hudson Braddock Park in North Bergen. Inside the car, there was a receipt from the George Washington Bridge, stamped at 3 p.m., which meant that Fernandez had to have gone to New York and returned that day. “We have learned that she went to the bank alone and emptied the bank account,” Del Priore said. “I take that fact as a good sign. She then just deserted the car and just vanished. We have no clue what happened next. It’s very strange and odd.” Detectives went to Fernandez’ home and found no signs of forced entry. “It’s also a good sign that her credit cards have not been used anywhere,” Del Priore said. “We’ve been closely monitoring that.” After interviewing her father and her friends, it was learned that Fernandez was clinically depressed and had been taking medication and receiving treatment for depression. “But we’ve learned that this is clearly out of her character,” Del Priore said. “She was always a very reliable person who showed up for work regularly. It’s a very unexplainable case. She could be just wandering out there. We really don’t know.” Fernandez is described as a short woman, about 4-foot-10 and 140 pounds and has short wavy black hair. She worked in the garment industry in Manhattan. She is a native of Uruguay and is bilingual. As it stands now, police are not suspecting foul play in Fernandez’ disappearance. “At this time, there is no evidence of foul play,” Del Priore said. “The case will remain active and open until we find out what happened. Without a doubt, this has us concerned and we’re working very hard to try to find this woman.” Anyone with any information concerning the disappearance of Sandra Fernandez is asked to contact the Weehawken police department at 863-7800.
