Who will be responsible 20-25 years from now?

Dear Editor: The two eloquently-written letters of B. Goldman and M. Ciuffitelli presented facts for all intelligent Weehawken residents to contemplate and act upon before waterfront development is fait accompli. Further, who will be responsible for health problems of new residents in 20 to 25 years? Roseland, as well as our current town leaders, will long be gone. West New York’s waterfront home sales contracts contain a caveat to prospective buyers that the homes rest upon highly toxic grounds. Why, if the land is safe for residency, is this warning necessary? Will the need for increased electric power, water, sewerage treatment be sufficient int he future. Should floods devastate new residences and infrastructure, who will provide remediation? Interestingly, the expensive sewerage treatment facility is not located on flood plains in West New York, but upon elevated, non-toxic ground. Finally, the current debacle in Buchanan, New York, area concerning the leaking Con Edison nuclear plant is a fine example of political irresponsibility: business experts allowed by politicians to make decisions altered by future events, leaving results squarely in the laps of taxpayers.
