The Coles Street drag strip accident count

Dear Editor: This is my second letter to the editor on ‘Coles Street municipal drag strip.’ I was going to start it with a little humor along the lines of ‘A screech, a honk and a curse and it’s another day on Coles Street’ but events this past Saturday afternoon don’t leave me feeling humorous. Sitting on my couch Saturday afternoon, I heard a sound that can only be compared to two dumpsters being slammed together. Looking out my window, once again another accident. This time it was serious. An ambulance took more than one person away from the scene and the police took names. We need more stop signs and we need the police to enforce the truck route that begins along the tracks at the beginning of Coles Street. The 25 mile an hour speed limit Is a joke, plain and simple. With no stop signs for almost 10 blocks, the speed limit seems like a suggestion not the law. I confess I’ve a bump in front of my building which informs me of the size of each truck that passes, and frankly I am amazed this goes on. Huge trucks, empty dump trucks, all matter of industry, sees Coles Street as an easy fast way to Newark Avenue. Some day one of these trucks won’t be able to stop in time. The kids of Coles Street are being ignored. Why isn’t anything being done? Concerned (again)
