Eagleson gets 300th; Cirino cut by Jets; Borowski’s a Bear

Congratulations to North Bergen softball coach Tom Eagleson on collecting the 300th victory of his coaching career last week. Although his Bruins have slumped a little recently after a great start and it took four attempts to reach the 300-win plateau, Eagleson’s team still sits atop the Hudson Reporter Top Five and still looms as the team to beat in the upcoming HCIAA playoffs.

Eagleson, who now has a phenomenal mark of 301-66 over 16 seasons at North Bergen, is a classy guy and is someone who is good for high school athletics. After getting selected to the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame earlier in the year, this has definitely been a year of accolades for Eagleson. Way to go…

If there was a way to give out two Athlete of the Week awards, then this week’s No. 2 would have been given to Hoboken’s P.J. High, who had a brilliant week for the Red Wings.

High led the Red Wings to the championship of the Trenton-Inter City Baseball Classic, played last weekend at the home of the Trenton Thunder. High was named the tourney MVP after being the winning pitcher in the title game and collecting three hits, including a homer, in the team’s 14-2 win over Camden…

It was definitely a downer to see that Pedro Cirino’s free agent attempt to make the New York Jets came to a sudden end, when the team released him after mini-camp. The former Boston College and St. Peter’s Prep standout safety was looking to latch on with the Jets, but has been battling a possible hernia and didn’t stack up physically.

It’s not known as of yet whether Cirino will receive another free agent chance from another NFL team…

On an up note, former major league pitcher and Marist product Joe Borowski is back in professional baseball – and he’s pitching locally again. Borowski signed a contract with the nearby Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League, with the hope of getting another crack at making a major league roster. Borowski was released by the Cincinnati Reds in spring training and was trying to secure another pro contract.

It will definitely help the Bears to have a local product on their roster…
