Barrio Festa, recent paintings by members of The Society of Philippine-American Artists at the Rotunda Gallery (280 Grove St., Jersey City, 547-5522), will be celebrated at a reception from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The show, which celebrates Filipino-American month, runs through May 19.
Friday, May 5:
The Every Others and Jody Joseph play Maxwell’s. Spock, also known as actor Leonard Nimoy, narrates a quest for intelligent life beyond earth in The Search of Life in the Universe at the Newark Museum’s Dreyfuss Planetarium (49 Washington St., Newark, 973-596-6355) at 2 p.m.
Saturday, May 6:
Psychic Janet Nohavec will return to the Edgewater Barnes & Noble (465 River Road, Egdewater, 943-6130). When Nohavec came to B&N in March, attendees were amazed by her observations and have been asking for a second appearance. DJ Spark kicks it up a notch at Jimmy D’s.
Sunday, May 7:
Pi, the movie about math, will be screened at Liquid Lounge for their Sunday Cinema series. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and there’s usually plenty of couch space for viewers. Rhett (of The Old 97s) will play at Maxwell’s with a special guest.
Monday, May 8:
Spirituality in the Landscape, an exhibit of paintings by Patti Barham Campbell, a master of fine arts degree candidate at New Jersey City University (2039 Kennedy Blvd., 200-3246), will be shown today through June 2 at the Harold B. Lemmerman Gallery on campus. A reception for the artist will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today.
Tuesday, May 9:
George Kilby Jr. plays the Scotland Yard. There’s an open mic poetry reading at Barnes & Noble (59 Washington St., Hoboken, 653-1165) featuring Mother’s Day poems, tonight at 7:30. Meanwhile, at the Edgewater B&N (465 River St., Englewood, 943-6130), it’s the premiere meeting of the science-fiction/fantasy book discussion. They’ll be discussing The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan.
Wednesday, May 10:
Jersey City’s own Better Off Dead is live at Scotland Yard. Sally Taylor and Brian Kelly check in to Maxwell’s tonight at 9. Kelly, you may recall, was scheduled to play the uptown back room last fall, but cancelled due to a death in the family.
