QUESTION: In high school volleyball, visiting team starts the first set of the match with six (6) eligible players on the floor. During the set, player (A) on visiting squad becomes injured and cannot continue to play. Is the set terminated? Does play continue?
ANSWER: Play continues with a loss of rally / point and serve awarded to opponent each time vacant slot rotates into right back serving position. ( Rule 1, Sec. 3, Art. 3 and Rule 6, Sec. 2, Art. 2).
QUESTION: In same situation as above in first set, with only six eligible players playing, player (A) is disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct. Visiting squad again has only five eligible players but for a different reason. Is set and match terminated?
ANSWER: After the start of a match, play is allowed to continue if squad has fewer than six eligible players due to illness, injury or disqualification. Penalty remains the same for vacant position. (Same rules as above apply).
